How Do I Qualify for Medicare in NJ?

Whether you need plans like Medicare Part B or A but have not been automatically enrolled, take steps to manually apply through the Social Security website or by contacting your local Social Security office. You will need to meet any of the following qualifications in order to move forward:

  • Be an American citizen or legal resident for at least five years;
  • Have a chronic condition or disability and receive disability benefits for two years;
  • You have Lou Gehrig's disease;
  • You are experiencing end-stage renal disease; or
  • You are 65 years of age.

How Do I Qualify for Additional Medicare Coverage in NJ?

If you need additional coverage not provided by Medicare Part A or B, you can qualify for any of the following (provided you already have Part A and B):

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) -
    • Must be within either the Medicare Open Enrollment (Oct. 15th - Dec. 7th) or have a special enrollment opportunity
    • Cannot have end-stage renal disease
    • Must live the NJ county the plan is offered in  
  • Medigap -
    • Health history questions can be asked if you do not have guaranteed issue
    • Must live in New Jersey
    • Cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Drug Coverage (Part D)-
    • Must be either the Medicare Open Enrollment (Oct. 15th - Dec. 7th) or have a special enrollment opportunity
    • Must live in New Jersey
